The Self help group project extends financial services to extremely impoverished women living in rural area to engage in self – employment initiatives to enable them to save, generate an income and in many cases to exit poverty. Around 250 women have participated in this venture.

The financial services are extended only to the female population of the villages because:

It has been observed that loans to women tend to more often benefit the whole family than loans to men do. It has also been observed that giving women the control and the responsibility of small loans raises their socio- economic status. This has brought about a positive change to many of the prevailing relationships of gender and class in rural India.

Weaving the Thread of Life
It helps women fight against oppressive social practices and become a force of development in their villages.

Women are a good credit risk. Experience shows that women are a good credit risk, and that women invest their income toward the well being of their families.

“ Economic growth and political democracy can not achieve their full potential unless the female half of humanity participates on an equal footing with the male.” – stated in the press release.

Development of women helps to advance democracy and human rights.
